A wee list of some of the best TEXAS has to offer...

THOSE PEABODYS
On almost any given night, you might spot Clarke's (singer for Those Peabodys) fuzzy blond 'fro drifting amongst the black-haired local scenesters lurking about Emo's. What you may not know is that this man fronts one of the most exciting and energetic bands Austin has to offer. Full of strong riffs and catchy lyrics, Those Peabodys' songs define what rock should be all about. Although they tend to be short, their sets get even the most jaded music lover wanting to 'get down.' Surprisingly and quite rare, their debut album does the live shows justice and is a great cd to listen to while driving near or far, walking to class or just when you're in the mood for some fresh ROCK.

...AND YOU WILL KNOW US BY THE TRAIL OF DEAD
I first heard about these guys from a friend from England. Ashamed that someone across the Atlantic had to recommend a local band to me, I vowed to go see what the big deal was. I had no idea what to expect, with a name like that...one's imagination could go wild. What I did witness was quite possibly the heaviest, craziest and purely chaotic show I have ever attended. I was scared I'd get whacked in the head with a guitar, I didn't know if the guys could stay on stage...the show was absolutely amazing. And I was warned of this. Just now the buzz has started with these guys on US soil...but I hear that they've grown rather large on the European scene. They've signed on to a major label, are about to release a new full length album, hang out with the likes of Elbow, Mogwai and Snow Patrol, and are set to tour the US and Europe...yup, these Austinites are on their way up and it's only a matter of time before they start charging crazy ticket prices to their shows.

please check out their site!!! it's pretty badass. www.trailofdead.com

THE DEATHRAY DAVIES
Not just another power pop rock band, the Deathray Davies deliver more than catchly lyrics and head-bobbing beats. This Dallas band has a steadily growing local fanbase and they seem to take every and any opportunity to tour in order to spread the word of their latest release, 'The Day of the Ray.' (currently touring the west coast with Dressy Bessy) They even have friends at *gasp* MTV. On several occasions their songs have been used as background music for the ever-so-trendy 'Real World.' But don't just assume these guys are sellouts, they remain unique to their sound and are very accessible after shows to converse with even the most random fan. With a badass lineup for the Idol Records showcase during this year's SXSW, it won't be long until the rest of the world picks up on one of our many great local bands.

THE POLYPHONIC SPREE
Who would have seen the new direction Tripping Daisy took once they called it quits after the death of a band member? The result: one of the most ambitious projects known to the local music scene in recent history. Take the remaining members of Tripping Daisy, throw in a full sized choir, trumpet, trombone, theramine, 2 keyboards, drums, flute, french horn, guitars, basses...and you'll evenutally end up with a dramatic and impressive collection of talent and sound. Never in my right mind would I ever have imagined such a combination of styles and people to make such innocently beautiful music. My personal musical tastes lean towards a more mellow, dark tone yet I give into the splurge of such happy melodies freely. It's about time for a change and the Spree is offering it to those interested. The only disappointment for this band would be the inability for them to arrange a tour any time soon. With about 25 people in the band, it seems hell enough for them to get down to Austin. Yet, when they do venture south of Dallas, it is not in vain. From the first time I saw them when they opened for Grandaddy last spring till their sold out show last month...I've seen this band's popularity grow tremendously. I'm very excited for these guys (and gals) and feel that they have many great things ahead for them in the future. If they do play in your town, by all means, GO to the show! You will not regret it. It's more of an experience rather than a concert. You'll leave smiling with warm fuzzies throughout.

SXSW 2002: sore feet, ringing ears and 28 bands...

So I've survived my 3rd year of south by southwest and I must say it's been the best ever. Seriously. Being 21 and having a music badge is truly the way to go.

EELS - truly the highlight of my week, i've been waiting literally YEARS to see them and they didn't disappoint. of course, i've been following them closely and was prepared for some of the 'surprises' they had in store but it was still amazing. i could've never asked for a better first time experience...i was able to film the show, my friend took pictures, i scored a setlist and met e and butch afterwards. they were cooler than i could've ever imagined and i love em more than ever.

THE POLYPHONIC SPREE - of course i knew they'd steal the week and the buzz began right after their first performance. i only caught their stubb's show and they were amazing. of all the bands playing this year, i tried to help spread the word on the spree...even introduced e to their greatness...

ELBOW/STARSAILOR/MY VITROL/SOUTH - this year was truly the year of the brits. happy to see elbow return, i was also pleased to catch the other acts perform in fairly intimate settings. granted, most brit bands are starting to sound the same at this point, i was quite entertained with all four bands.

KID DAKOTA - i was pleasantly surprised with this show. it'd sound like i'm kissing the ass of the individual who asked me to attend their set but i really love what i heard and hope to see more stuff from them in the future. the music has a thickness to it...i dunno how to describe it...it's pretty incredible.

ATOM AND HIS PACKAGE - with nothing to do during this time slot, i met up with a fellow sxsw volunteer and we caught this rather amusing act. i loved it. i don't know about going out and actually buying a cd but for a live show, atom does well.

SUPERDRAG - i was super-psyched to finally get to catch them and yet they ended up plagued with shitty sound and a dink sound guy. i felt bad for them, they were pissed and rightfully so. i was told they'd be back in the summer...i'll surely catch them then.

I AM THE WORLD TRADE CENTER - saw some of their set at buffalo billards. it just didn't seem right. i wasn't too impressed. i left.

JOHN VANDERSLICE - this was also the year to catch vanderslice, having seen him play stubb's a few weeks before sxsw, i knew i'd catch him as much as i could during sxsw. besides the fact that he's probably one of the nicest guys i've ever met, i really love his sound and although the singer/songwriter thing is the buzz now, vanderslice still maintains an originality all his own.

THEY MIGHT BE GIANTS - not a huge fan but i liked them enough to take on the masses lined up outside, i was really impressed with their performance. probably wouldn't cough up the to see them if they ever returned on their own but it was an enjoyable experience nevertheless.

BOWLING FOR SOUP - ugh. caught the end of their set and from what i saw, they disgusted me. well. maybe not all of them but one member in particular. yeck.

HOUSEHOLD NAMES - seen em a million times and it was about time they had an audience they deserved. that show proved to be very good and they really shined. mad props to them and their future.

THE WEBB BROTHERS - as elbow was my shocker badass performance of sxsw 2001, the webb brothers blew me away this year. my god. seriously, they had me standing their with a big shitty grin on my face and warm fuzzies. i really hope they return to austin in the near future, i can't wait to see them again.

THOSE PEABODYS - as always, they deliver the rock. pretty soon everyone else will catch on to their greatness... for now, i'll soak in all the smaller local shows i can.

SPARTA - i could only stay for half their set but it was enough to miss them. i'd only seen them once before and i wish they'd play austin more cuz they really do rock. kinda wish i stayed to see the craziness of the icarus line...

phew. i'm writing too much. i saw serveral more bands but this is already getting way too long. sxsw is truly the bestest time of the year for a music freak/dork like myself.

EL GATO
Known as El Gato...this beautiful band outta the land of Denton, TX sounds like Beulah had Tripping Daisy's love child and he grew up to make his parents quite proud. Their recent release called 'We're Birds' is just filled to the brim with gentle melodies, wonderful pop and an attitude of its own. If given the chance, it would be strongly recommended that you either grab a copy or get your ass out to an actual gig. You won't be sorry.
